Life can be relentlessly fast-paced, chaotic and stressful at times and one of the best policies to have is a backup plan. It’s something we learn when we’re very small – even at the age of two or three. If mom says no ask dad, right?
Backup plans change, but stay necessary throughout the years. Example: teen-aged kids that don’t want to do their homework. They either pay a sibling to do it so it’s not late, or they ask for extra credit work to make up the grade. Whatever the case may be, we always find a way to save our rear ends.
In the adult world, backup plans are important too because life isn’t perfect, right? You might have an emergency fund in case things go south with your employment situation. You keep insurance on your home in case of a natural disaster. If you’re single, you might date two or three people at the same time just in case one doesn’t work out. In other words, the backup plan is still there. As entrepreneurs, we need even more of a backup plan than others, especially if you’re a one-man show. Things happen.
What kind of plan do you have in place if an emergency arises?
What constitutes an emergency varies, obviously. An emergency could mean that your child breaks an arm at school and you have to drop everything and leave work to take them to the doctor. Do you close down your entire business for the afternoon or is there someone to cover for you? Let’s say you’re like one of our clients who has a morning presentation, is stuck in traffic on 35W south and is never going to make it in time because she has to stop at the office to pick up the notes.
That’s where your virtual assistant — Plan B — comes in handy. Since you can’t be in two places at once, your assistant can email your notes to you so you don’t have to stop at your office and waste more time. A virtual assistant can cancel your appointments for the rest of the day so you can get your son’s arm casted up.

The beauty of being a solopreneur is having the flexibility for broken arms and traffic jams. No one will fire you for spending the afternoon with your kid in the ER or even for spending the day fishing if you so choose. That’s likely one of the reasons you started your own business in the first place. However, having a backup plan is imperative.
